Who We Are
The Friends organization of St. Marks Wildlife Refuge is a non-profit volunteer group which supports the conservation, education, and preservation work of the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. We work closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service team to support the precious wildlife of the St. Marks refuge. By funding education programs at local schools and conducting classes at the refuge, we encourage awareness of our natural resources. With donations from our Friends in the community, plus funds from the Nature Store operations, we finance research and educational projects, volunteer training, special events at the Refuge, and equipment for support programs.

Experience the Beauty of the Refuge
For nature lovers, wildlife abounds. Deer, bobcats, alligators, and the occasional black bear can be seen. Many bird species nest and raise their young at the Refuge. For those interested in history, the recently restored century-old St. Marks Lighthouse offers a glimpse into the historical and nautical past. This is truly a special place - it’s a “refuge” for wildlife and people.
Due to several requests from birders, the Friends of St. Marks Wildlife Refuge have made available trash grabbers or reach extenders available for check out at the VisitorCenter front desk. If you see trash while birding on the refuge, you no longer need to reach in the weeds and risk a bite. Ask for one of the colorful trash grabbers at the VC before you head out. Bring your own trash bag and help keep the refuge clean while enjoying our beautiful wildlife.
